Narendra Modi for use of tech in governance

NEW DELHI: Describing internet as a "gamechanger",  Gujarat chief minister   Narendra Modi  on Thursday said politicians ought to use technology for bringing in good governance, accountability and transparency as well as reaching out to the people. "Internet is a gamechanger...Common citizens (can) now directly engage in policy making process," Modi said through video-conferencing at an event organised by  internet search giant Google  here. He said internet has empowered people and made communication with leaders and the government a two-way process. Earlier politicians used to bombard people with their views but now it is not only two-way but also real time and updated, the BJP leader said. "Citizens now have a direct say (in governance). Stung by row, UPSC allows regional language in Main exam

NEW DELHI: Succumbing to the pressure of those who were opposed to pro-English and pro-Hindi tilt of  UPSC  in civil services (Main) examination, the government on Thursday finally restored the status of other scheduled languages by bringing partial change in the March 5th notification allowing aspirants to take their test in any regional language.  Besides, aspirants can also opt for literature of any of the 22 eighth schedule languages and English as their optional subject even if they didn't study them during their undergraduate courses.  Under the fresh notification, the marks of English (100 marks as specified by March 5th notification) will also not be counted for making merit list of selected candidates for elite services like  IAS , IFS, IPS and other central jobs.  The UPSC, however, increased the marks of essay paper from existing 200 to 250. Why a probationary officer post at State Bank of India is a bankable asset

 when State Bank of India invited applications for 1,000 probationary officer posts, around 5.1 lakh candidates across the country lined up for a shot. This year, when the country's largest bank advertised for 1,500 vacancies for the same roles, 1.7 million candidates applied. If 510 candidates applied for every job available in 2012, 1,142 are now in the race for every probationary officer slot. Why such a jump in one year? "The lacklustre job market, competitive entry-level salaries and the perks have made us even more attractive," says  SBI  chief general manager (HR)  Ranjit Goswami . "In a dull market, any good opportunity is seeing a more-than-usual number of applicants. And SBI ranks right up there in terms of good opportunities," says A G Rao, managing director, ManpowerGroup India. Earlier this month, the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey of 5,370 employers across India reported that year-on-year hiring prospects have weakened by 19 percentage points.

Selfish people get promoted easily

People with selfish and  aggressive  behaviour are seen as more attractive for leadership, and are most likely to be promoted at work, according to a new study. The study found that those with more selfless, kind  personalities  were the most well-liked, but were simultaneously perceived as less attractive candidates for leadership and were overlooked for  promotion , the  Daily Mail  reported. It found that aggression implied strength, while altruistic tendencies were perceived as a sign of weakness. The study, from the Kellogg School of Management, Stanford Graduate School of Business and Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business, also discovered that those with the kinder personalities were the most popular in the groups, but they were also considered weak or gullible.
